After three years of closure for extensive renovations, the Johor Zoo, Malaysia’s oldest zoo, is set to reopen its doors on National Day, 31 August 2024. The highly anticipated reopening follows a series of major upgrades designed to breathe new life into this historic institution, blending the charm of its rich heritage with modern facilities to create a unique experience for visitors.

The reopening of the Johor Zoo will be officially commemorated on 28 August, when Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim will officiate the ceremony, three days ahead of the public opening. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who recently visited the renovated zoo, shared his excitement that the revamped zoo would once again become a favorite destination for both locals and tourists.
A Journey Through Time

The Johor Zoo, originally known as ‘Kebun Bintang,’ was founded in 1928 by the late Sultan Sir Ibrahim Sultan Abu Bakar. Initially, it served as the Johor royalty’s personal collection of animals, a symbol of the Sultan’s travels and connections across the globe. In 1962, the zoo was handed over to the state government and opened to the public, marking the beginning of its journey as a beloved public attraction.
This year’s renovation marks the first major upgrade in the zoo’s nearly century-long history. The revitalization project has introduced several new features, including a new entrance and ticketing area, fresh landscaping, upgraded walkways, a souvenir center, a children’s playground, and a larger parking area. These improvements aim to enhance the visitor experience while maintaining the zoo’s historic ambiance.
A New Era for Johor Zoo

The upgraded Johor Zoo now houses over 275 animals from 53 species, including tigers, elephants, camels, monkeys, tapirs, and a large reptile exhibit. The zoo’s new layout and attractions are designed to offer a more engaging and educational experience for visitors of all ages.
To celebrate its reopening, the Johor Zoo will offer a special promotion from 31 August to 30 September. During this period, Malaysian adults can enjoy a 50% discount on admission tickets, while children, senior citizens, and people with disabilities (OKU) will receive free entry.
The standard ticket prices after the promotion are RM10 for Malaysian adults, RM5 for children aged 5 and above and senior citizens, and RM30 for foreign visitors. Children under five years old and OKU cardholders will continue to enjoy free entry.
A Boost to Tourism

The reopening of the Johor Zoo is a key initiative in the state government’s broader strategy to promote tourism, particularly in the lead-up to Visit Johor Year 2026. With a target of attracting 12 million tourists, the zoo is expected to play a significant role in showcasing the cultural and natural heritage of Johor.
Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi expressed his gratitude to all those involved in the renovation project. “Come and explore Malaysia’s oldest zoo with your family and friends starting 31 August. Your presence will not only enrich your understanding of our history but also support the success of Visit Johor Year 2026.”
