Starting January next year, Malaysians traveling to or transiting through the UK will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). The British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has announced that the ETA is a digital permit required for short-term visitors who currently do not need a visa or hold UK immigration status before traveling.
By April 2025, all visitors from visa-exempt countries will need an ETA to enter the UK. This new requirement aligns with the approach taken by other countries, such as the US and Australia, to enhance border security. The British High Commission noted that the ETA would contribute to a more streamlined and secure digital immigration system for the millions of travelers who pass through UK borders each year.\
The introduction of the ETA began in stages for various countries in November 2023. Malaysians can start applying from 27 November 2024, for travel commencing on 8 January 2025.
Applications can be submitted on the GOV.UK website, with a straightforward and quick process, often yielding a decision within three working days. For faster processing, travelers can use the UK ETA app.
The cost is £10 (approximately RM56) and is valid for two years or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever comes first. During this period, visitors can make multiple trips to the UK, staying up to six months per visit.
If a new passport is issued, a new ETA must be obtained. Additional information on eligibility can be found on the UK government website.
