KLCC Incident Highlights New Car Theft Tactics – Are You Prepared?

Last month, a man named Zach Khai Shin shared a troubling experience on Facebook that highlighted the growing issue of car theft. After parking his white Honda HR-V at the Suria KLCC mall via the valet service, he returned half an hour later only to find that his car had vanished.

The Car Theft Incident

Despite the keys being with the valet staff, the car had disappeared, leaving Zach bewildered. Using the car’s GPS tracker, he discovered that the vehicle was already in Subang. The police were promptly involved, and an investigation into the car theft ensued.

Official Statement From Suria KLCC

Suria KLCC quickly released an official statement addressing the incident. The mall confirmed that a vehicle entrusted to their valet service was indeed stolen, despite being securely parked by the valet attendant. They stated that upon receiving the report, they launched a comprehensive investigation in collaboration with the authorities.

CCTV footage was reviewed, revealing that an unidentified individual managed to enter the car and drive it away while the keys remained securely stored at the valet counter. With the help of both the CCTV footage and the car’s GPS system, the suspect was apprehended shortly after.

The mall’s statement emphasized that this was an unprecedented event for their valet parking service, noting that such an incident had never occurred before. In light of this, they assured that the valet service’s standard operating procedures would be thoroughly reviewed to prevent future occurrences.

In a follow-up post made on July 8, he revealed that the vehicle had since been recovered and revealed that it had been tracked using an AirTag.

But how did the thief gain access to the car without the keys? One possible explanation is a ‘relay attack,’ a sophisticated digital theft technique. In relay theft, criminals exploit vulnerabilities in keyless entry and start systems. The thief uses a device to capture the signals from the key fob, which is then relayed to an accomplice’s device near the car. This process tricks the car’s system into thinking the key fob is nearby, allowing the car to be unlocked and started without the physical key.

These relay devices are relatively inexpensive, and can allow access to your vehicle in under 20 seconds. Such tools are becoming more accessible, making it crucial for car owners to adopt proactive measures to protect their vehicles.

6 Effective Tips to Prevent Car Theft

  1. Store Your Key Fob Away from Doors and Windows Thieves rely on proximity to intercept and amplify the signal from your key fob. Therefore, it’s important to keep your fob as far away from doors and windows as possible, especially the front door where keys are often left. The further your key fob is from your vehicle, the harder it is for thieves to gain access.
  2. Use a Signal-Blocking Pouch or Bag To prevent unauthorized access, consider storing your key fob in a signal-blocking pouch or bag. These small, portable bags block the signal emitted by your key fob, making it impossible for thieves to pick it up. They are affordable, typically costing around £5, and can also be used for other remote entry devices.
  3. Disable the Fob’s Wireless Signal A simple yet effective measure is to turn off your key fob’s wireless signal when not in use. Depending on your car’s make and model, you may be able to do this manually. Consult your vehicle’s user manual to see if this option is available, as it can prevent thieves from intercepting the signal altogether.
  4. Reprogram Key Fobs If you’ve purchased a second-hand vehicle or lost a key fob, it’s wise to have the key fobs reprogrammed. This process, though not cheap, ensures that any previously paired key fobs or copies are rendered useless. It’s a small price to pay for the added peace of mind that your vehicle is secure and helps in preventing car theft.
  5. Invest in a Steering Wheel Lock Steering wheel locks act as a visual and physical deterrent, making it significantly harder for thieves to drive away with your car. While digital thieves may be adept at bypassing keyless systems, they often struggle with mechanical barriers. Steering wheel locks are also visible from outside the vehicle, which can discourage thieves from targeting your car. Additionally, using a steering wheel lock might help lower your car insurance premiums and reduce the risk of car theft.
  6. Always Lock Your Car and Hide Valuables Never leave your keyless car unlocked, even if you’re just stepping away briefly. Thieves can start your car in under 20 seconds with the right equipment. Additionally, avoid leaving valuables in plain sight, as they can attract opportunistic thieves. Electronic items, such as smartphones and laptops, are particularly enticing to criminals, so it’s best to remove them from your car whenever possible to avoid car theft.

As keyless car theft becomes more sophisticated, understanding the threat and taking action is crucial for every vehicle owner. The recent case of the stolen Honda HR-V at Suria KLCC underscores the effectiveness and speed with which thieves can operate. However, by implementing the six tips outlined above, you can significantly reduce the risk of car theft and becoming a victim. Combining these practices with additional security features, such as motion sensors and tracking devices, and staying informed about the latest theft techniques will help you stay one step ahead of criminals.
