If you work at Pudu, then you must know the legendary uncle who sells charcoal-grilled bak kwa (dried meat) bun on his motor outside ICC Pudu. This 80-year-old uncle has been selling bak kwa bun for almost 40 years at Pudu, KL! Known as Uncle Chai a.k.a “Uncle Six”, he has never stopped selling his iconic bak kwa bun since 1982 up this every day.
After selling bak kwa on his humble motorcycle since 1982, he finally has his own cafe in Pudu
His legendary charcoal-grilled bak kwa bun keeps people coming back for more. He sells the traditionally grilled buns over charcoal with a smokey aroma that consists of a slice of bak kwa, chicken floss and cucumber. Then, it’s topped with chilli or tomato sauce to add more flavours.
Meet Uncle Chai who has been selling bak kwa since 1982
Uncle Chai was born and raised in Sentul. He used to work several jobs in his early years. However, he began selling bak kwa and floss buns in the early 80s, while juggling with his work at a cinema. Unfortunately, his side business selling bak kwa turned into his full-time job once the cinema closed down. He had to travel on his motorcycle to busy areas whenever he could to sell bak kwa .
Initially, he settled for a stall at Imbi market but soon after, moved to a fixed spot at ICC Pudu. His business is called “Winson Burger” – inspired by the Chinese translation of “everlasting victory.” He toasted the buns over charcoal as he explained back in the day, the older generation would toast buns this way as it gave the bread a smokey aroma.
His bak kwa is affordable yet tasty
His bak kwa consists of meat floss, followed by some cucumbers, a bak kwa slice and sauce. He sells the classic Chinese breakfast at RM3.30 per bun. Currently, Uncle Chai officially owns a cafe located in Pudu. The cafe, Uncle 6 Toast Bar is named after the uncle himself with a Kopitiam concept. The cafe was launched by Gary Lim, the business owner. The Kopitiam serves an authentic Chinese-style menu – highlighting the legendary bak kwa buns.
Uncle Chai said as he has turned 80 years old, he may not be able to work for long. Thus, this Kopitiam is his plan to continue selling bak kwa. The staff will be in charge of cooking and preparing the meals – exactly like how Uncle Chai toasted the buns.
